Garden of the Grieving Mother
In honour of ANZAC Day, on Wednesday 24 April the club learned about the history of the Arch of Victory, the Avenue of Honour, and the Garden of the Grieving Mother from Garry Snowden, President of the Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour Committee.
We also learned how the Lucas Girls’ played such a vital role in creating two of Ballarat’s most distinguished historical landmarks - the nationally renowned Avenue of Honour and the Arch of Victory, paying tribute to the 3,801 local men and nurses who enlisted in World War I.
Also, 16 Ballarat Soldiers were killed on the first day at Gallopoli and 48 sets of brothers from Ballarat are honoured in the Avenue.
Lest We Forget!.
Garry is clearly very passionate about the Avenue and the Arch of Victory and that came across in his beautiful presentation of facts and stories and we loved the use of old photographs to add context and personalisation.
After hearing from Garry the Club went across the road for a delicious breakfast at the Arch View cafe.
