District Violence in District 9780

On Wed 22nd Oct '25, we welcomed Carolyn Millard via Zoom, who reported on the activities undertaken by various clubs across the district to raise awareness and thus educate all on domestic and family violence.

Carolyn is a member of the Portland Rotary Club. Along with the other club in Portland they are making domestic violence a key part of their activities. She shared definitions for family and domestic violence, along with relevant statistics from across the district. For example, she shared that one female is killed through domestic violence every 8 days, whilst one male is killed every 41 days.

It is clear that through Rotary’s actions the community can make social changes via education that can lead to greater empowerment for all. Carolyn explained that the first club to raise this issue was the Rotary Club of Melbourne. From then, many clubs in district 9780 have undertaken to create and host different activities and events to raise community awareness.

Some of these included, banners and signage pertaining to family and domestic violence at public events, community walks, signage on the back of toilet doors in public areas and in schools, education modules, community forums, pocket guides, to name a few. Many Rotary clubs in our district have made these great achievements in collaboration with other community groups, businesses and organisations.
