Why Trivia for Timor Leste?
Mary Anne Dwyer (retired Sister of Mercy in Ballarat) has spent 17 years in Timor Leste. During her Missionary experience she was exposed to and immersed in the utter poverty and fragility of the country.
It was evident to a local young man that the elderly, handicapped, young children, pregnant women and other vulnerable people needed help. The daily struggles of tropical weather, long walks, going to the market, appointments, and making efforts to get to family occasions, was so often beyond their reach.
This Timorese man, a victim of poverty and war trauma himself, dared to dream of a way to assist these people by getting a UTE vehicle to use as transport for the community.
This person is well known to Mary Anne. He is very honest and responsible and has a very reliable mechanic who is mentoring this venture. The middle-aged man has tested the roads with different vehicles and has chosen the most suitable. The vehicle will be modified to include seating on the back and a canvas awning to shield from the weather.
After many years and impacted by Covid restrictions, Mary Anne has nearly reached her target, needing $USD2,000 (AUD $3,000) for the purchase of a vehicle.
The Rotary Club of Wendouree Breakfast has taken up the challenge of making this dream a reality by hosting a trivia night to raise funds to assist Mary Anne achieve her target of $3,000.
