On the 6th Nov '24, Past club member Kath Venters presented to us about the current activities of Shelterbox. Kath made a great presentation which was enhanced by her personal experience of working in disaster zones in Cambodia in her working life.
We learnt that Shelterbox, which originated in the UK, has refined the products and offerings in response to direct feedback from people working in disaster zones. The products available have been expanded beyond the traditional box of camping goods that most of us have seen in the past. They now include tool kits, basic materials such as tarpaulins and even small amounts of cash to boost local economies after disasters hit. There is a focus on improving the self-reliance and dignity of people suffering in difficult circumstances.
Our club was presented with a bronze Shelterbox Champion award for its financial contributions to Shelterbox over the past three years.
In Rotary you meet some seriously good people – this week’s speaker Kath Venters is certainly one of those.
