Poliomyelitis commonly called polio is an acute viral disease characterised by inflammation of the nerve cells.

Rotarys aim is to rid the world of this disease that largely targets infants and children.

So far Rotary's contribution to the global polio eradication effort have exceeded US$700 million. In addition, millions of dollars of 'in-kind' and personal contributions have been made by and through local Rotary clubs.

Huge numbers of volunteers are mobilized to deliver oral vaccine to children across the world. From the launch of the initiative in 1988, 122 nations have benefited with more than two billion children receiving the vaccine.

Rotary works with the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children Fund and the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

While Australia is polio free we are mindful that it is only a plane ride away.
