With the assistance of the CFA, the Rotary Club of Wendouree Breakfast developed an assistance program to coincide with the CFA’s advertised changeover weekend each year when daylight saving ends.
In recent years the club has worked with the City of Ballarat by advertising the battery changeover service in its quarterly newsletter to older citizens within the Ballarat urban area. As a result, over 130 individuals registered in 2009.
Calls for volunteers from within the club drew an excellent response with over 70% of the clubs members participating.
Media coverage in the days preceding the weekend helped remind all members of the community of the importance of regularly checking their smoke detectors and changing the battery.
Over the 4th and 5th April, each Rotary team (of two members), armed with their bags of batteries, local map and a ladder, set out to visit between six to eight homes over a two to three hour period.
With good planning, kind weather, and warm welcomes, teams quickly worked through the 110 addresses with no mishaps.
Our thanks go to all who participated and the goodwill of Ballarat’s residents who made participation a rewarding endeavour.
