Public ShelterBox Display at Trash & Treasure Market
The ShelterBox was erected at the Rotary Club of Ballarat South's Trash and Trivia Market at the Ballarat Showgrounds on February 1st 2009. The aim of the display was two fold: to raise public awareness of the work of Rotary in particular the ShelterBox program and to collect donations to purchase a 'box'.
In conjunction with the display a sausage sizzle was held adjacent to the tent. The $740 profit was supplemented from club funds to purchase another $1,200 box.
While market goers were interested in the contents of the box only $93.90 was donated. The most positive outcome was in the field of public awareness. Several visiting Rotarians from other parts of Victoria were pleased to see the tent and its contents displayed as they had only seen photos and text resulting in their desire to introduce it as a project of their home club. Teachers and students from several schools also expressed interest in using ShelterBox as a community service project in their school.
