Michael Phillips Talks About the New Ballarat Golf Club
Our weekly meeting on Wednesday 9th December, 2009 was held at the new Ballarat Golf Club.
The General Manager of the recently opened new club facilities of the Ballarat Golf Club, Michael Phillips addressed members. The club began in 1895 and is the oldest continually played course in Australia. A business deal was struck with a local housing developer to develop a housing estate situated around the 56 hectare championship standard golf course.
The club house function centre is planned to bring in revenue to maintain the club into the future. The bistro serves meals daily while the function room can accommodate many styles of functions and meetings.
The club is managed by a board of management utilising the expertise of local business people both retired and employed. There is currently a decline in members and there are less people playing golf. One reason for this is time, golf cannot be played in a short time - management is looking at ways this can be addressed.
Water was a major issue in the planning so the design incorporates dams for storing site drainage and capturing all rain fall which are recyled through the system.
