Rejuvenated by Excellent Speakers
As promised by DG Jessie most Rotarians left the March 2011 Conference with renewed spirit and resolve to continue and advance the work of Rotary worldwide.
A lively group of speakers inspired us with their personal stories of courage and determination that allows then to achieve success despite meeting barriers along the way. Matthew CowdreyOAM is one of the top amputee athletes in the world. Born with a congenital amputation to his lower left arm has overcome this barrier to achieve Paralympic, World Championship and Commonwealth Games glory.
Miriam Silva is currently General Manager - Commercial Operations, with Elders Limited. Miriam is one of of only a small number of Muslim women working in a senior business position in Australia. She talked about the benefits of good leadership skills - communication is fundamental to leading - keep everyone in the loop.
Susan Barton AM - Founder and Executive Director of Lighthouse Foundation. Susan discovered an immense compassion for the homeless while volunteering at an orphanage in Sri Lanka. On returning to Australia Susan began by fostering children in her own home, then with communication and determination the Lighthouse Foundation was born.

The Hon Dr Kay Patterson told us of the work of Interplast, an organisation supported by Rotarians that repairs bodies leading to building lives. Badly deformed young people receive life changing surgery from volunteer medical staff - during this surgery local surgeons are trained in delicate and unusual procedures.
Conference goers heard about the latest updates of many Rotary Projects - each reminding us that our contribution does make a difference. Leadership, compassion, challenge and communication combined to renew our Rotary spirit and commitment.
