Guest Speaker - Dean Lanyon, Thai Fusion Restaurant.
My name is Dean Lanyon and I was born in Boort, Victoria, Australia, a small country town renowned for its water sports. I currently live in Ballarat, Victoria, have two young sons and am qualified as a Mechanical Engineer and Secondary School Teacher.
During my life, I have had two major and unexpected hurdles to overcome, which have really tested my resilience.
The first occurred when I was 18 years old. I was the driver in a fatal car accident in Australia in which my 21 year old sister, Jenny, was killed.
The second occurred 10 years later in 1996 when I was living/working in the USA. I suffered a severe cerebral aneurysm (brain haemorrhage) and subsequent mild stroke and was in a coma for 10 weeks; after which I was basically like a new born baby.

My experiences surrounding these two major hurdles have taught me a great deal about the need for personal resilience, and how to develop it in oneself. I have formed these learnings into a presentation that I now present, with great impact, to corporations, schools and community groups.
My presentation encourages people to think about the concept of resilience and how to develop it, as well as providing a powerful road safety message.
