Paul Harris Fellows - Introduction
The presentation of a Paul Harris Recognition is the Rotary Foundation's way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its Annual Programs Fund, Polio Plus or humanitarian grants programs. It is named after Rotary's founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.
The Paul Harris Fellows was established in his honour in 1957 to express appreciation for a $US1000 donation made to the above programs of The Rotary Foundation. Recognition is then given to the donor or someone, not necessarily a Rotarian, nominated by the donor to honour them. Our club has made a commitment to make a $US100 per member per year donation to The Foundation. This accumulates, allowing us as a club to recognize worthy recipients, either from the club or from the community, by the awarding of a Paul Harris Fellow certificate.
The programs of The Foundation include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Foundation activities provide educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunizations, and shelter for millions of people. These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians and Rotary clubs around the globe.
Contributions to The Rotary Foundation are an investment in the ideal of goodwill, peace and understanding – ideals held high by Rotarians around the world.
Rotarians often designate a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose and a commitment to Rotary and to the objectives of The Rotary Foundation.
There are two ways a person can be designated a Paul Harris Fellow:- (1) A Rotary club can select a recipient as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objects of The Rotary Foundation and, (2) The Rotary Foundation expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to the educational and humanitarian work of the Foundation.
